uses a lot of Java and scripts which may result in slower performance on some computers.

At this moment, I can tell you that the annual HPLC User's Group meeting will be
on June 1, 1999 from 6:30 to 9:00! I have been granted a hotel by ASM but before I book
such an expensive place, I'd like a show of hands as to who will be there. So please email

soon as the location has been determined.

notification on the RapidVap. The notification is regarding provision of a free retrofit
kit for the RapidVap to assure the confinement of glass fragments in the event of a

I thought you might like to see an HPLC pattern of "Mycobacterium
canettii". This is from an isolate (NZM 217/94) kindly sent to me by Dr Gaby Pfyffer
of the Institut f�r Medizinische Mikrobiologie der Universit�t Z�rich.
Dr Pfyffer recently published a reference to this organism in the October-December 1998
issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases [Pfyffer, GE, R Auckenthaler, JDA van Embden and D
van Soolingen. 1998. Mycobacterium canettii, the smooth variant of M. tuberculosis,
isolated from a Swiss patient in Africa. Emerg Infect Dis 4:631-634]. It was initially
described as part of the M. tuberculosis complex [van Soolingen, D, T Hoogenboezem, PE de
Haas, PW Hermans, MA Koedam, KS Teppema, PJ Brennan, GS Besra, F Portaels, J Top, LM
Schouls and JD van Embden. 1997. A novel pathogenic taxon of the Mycobacterium
tuberculosis complex, Canetti: characterization of an exceptional isolate from Africa. Int
J Syst Bacteriol 47:1236-1245].
The HPLC pattern looks like M. tuberculosis (surprise!). More information can be obtained

Linda Guthertz, Chairperson's resignation letter:
It is with regret that I submit this letter of resignation to the HPLC Steering
committee.
I have served as chairperson since 1992 and feel that as of June 1, 1999, it will be time
for someone with fresh thoughts and ideas to take over.
I have done what I could to make this a vital group and to promote the HPLC technique
within the public health community. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you.
